Design & Build
Dell’s XPS 16, now also sold under the Dell Premium 16 name, is a masterclass in restrained industrial design. The machined aluminum body feels dense and luxurious, the edge-to-edge keyboard maximizes key size, and the near-borderless display makes the 16.3-inch panel feel expansive. The OLED UHD+ touchscreen option is stunning for photo and video work, with deep blacks and vibrant color, while the seamless haptic touchpad and capacitive function row keep the deck clean. It’s genuinely one of the best-looking laptops you can buy. The trade-off is that this thin, sleek chassis has to work hard to cool a Core Ultra 9 and RTX 4060, which shows up under sustained stress.
Performance
The Core Ultra 9 185H with 32GB of fast LPDDR5X and a 1TB or larger SSD makes short work of everyday productivity, photo editing, and timeline scrubbing. The RTX 4060 adds real creative acceleration for rendering, AI tasks, and GPU-assisted exports, and it plays modern games at 1080p and many at the panel’s native resolution with tuned settings. Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 7, and a fingerprint reader keep the platform current. The honest caveat is thermals and battery: pushing the CPU and GPU together in such a slim body raises fan noise and can nudge clocks down under long loads, and the high-resolution OLED is demanding on battery. For bursts of creative and gaming work it excels; for marathon full-tilt sessions, a thicker gaming laptop stays cooler.
Pros & Cons
- Stunning premium design with a gorgeous OLED UHD+ option
- Strong Core Ultra 9 plus RTX 4060 for creative and gaming versatility
- Fast, modern connectivity with Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 7
- Excellent keyboard and haptic touchpad on a clean, spacious deck
- Thermals are tight under sustained combined CPU/GPU load
- Battery drains quickly with the high-resolution display
- Premium price and polarizing capacitive function row
Alternatives to Consider
Dell’s own newer Premium 16 revisions swap in Intel Core Ultra 200-series chips and RTX 5050 or RTX 5060 graphics, which bring efficiency and performance gains worth considering if you’re buying fresh. A 2K 120Hz configuration also trades some pixel density for smoother motion and better battery than the 4K OLED. If you prioritize sustained gaming performance over portability and looks, a dedicated gaming laptop with a thicker cooling system will hold higher clocks for less money.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the XPS 16 a good gaming laptop?
It games well in bursts thanks to the RTX 4060, handling modern titles at 1080p and many at higher settings. Its slim chassis limits sustained thermal headroom, so it’s a capable gamer rather than a dedicated one.
Should I get the OLED or the non-OLED display?
The OLED UHD+ panel is spectacular for creative work and media, but it uses more battery. If longevity matters more than pixel density, a lower-resolution high-refresh panel is the more practical choice.
Can it handle professional video editing?
Yes. The Core Ultra 9, 32GB of memory, and RTX 4060 make it a capable editing machine for photo and video work, with GPU acceleration speeding up exports and effects.
Does it have enough ports?
It leans heavily on Thunderbolt 4 USB-C, so you’ll likely want a dock or adapters for legacy peripherals, HDMI, and card readers depending on your workflow.
Verdict
The Dell XPS 16 with RTX 4060 is one of the most desirable premium 16-inch laptops for creators who also game, delivering flagship looks, a beautiful display, and genuinely capable performance. Just go in knowing the slim design trades some sustained thermal headroom and battery life for its elegance. If you want power wrapped in a machine you’re proud to carry, it delivers.
