Windows 11 dominates the PC gaming landscape thanks to DirectX 12 Ultimate support, broad driver compatibility, and day-one support for nearly every AAA title, but the way it performs depends heavily on the machine underneath it, whether that’s a liquid-cooled desktop tower or a handheld you take on the road.
This guide breaks down six of the most capable Windows 11 gaming machines on the market right now, from RTX 5070 desktop rigs built for 4K to compact handhelds that pack surprising power into a few inches of screen. We’ll help you figure out which category and configuration fits your budget, space, and play style.

How to Choose a Gaming PC or Handheld for 2026
- GPU tier: Match the graphics card to your target resolution—RTX 5060-class cards handle 1080p/1440p well, while RTX 5070 and above are built for 1440p and 4K.
- CPU and RAM balance: Look for at least 16GB of RAM for modern titles, though 32GB DDR5 gives you headroom for streaming, modding, and multitasking.
- Storage speed and capacity: A 1TB NVMe SSD is the practical minimum today; heavy libraries benefit from 2TB drives to avoid constant uninstalling.
- Form factor and portability: Decide whether you need a stationary powerhouse desktop or a handheld/laptop hybrid for gaming on the go.
- Cooling and power delivery: Sustained performance depends on solid cooling (liquid coolers for desktops) and a reliable 80+ rated PSU to avoid throttling or instability.

Is Windows 11 still the best OS for gaming in 2026?
Yes—Windows 11 remains the standard for PC gaming due to its near-universal game compatibility, DirectX 12 Ultimate support, and continuous driver updates from NVIDIA and AMD.
Do I need a desktop or is a handheld enough?
Desktops offer more raw power and easier upgrades, while handhelds like the ROG Ally X or GPD Win Max 2 trade some performance for portability and flexibility.

16GB is the functional minimum for current titles, but 32GB is increasingly recommended if you multitask, stream, or run modded game instances alongside your games.
