Key takeaways
- Add a Window Capture source and choose the Roblox window (RobloxPlayerBeta.exe).
- Set Capture Method to “Windows 10 (1903 and up)”. The older BitBlt method often returns a black or white frame with Roblox.
- Play in fullscreen (F11 or the Fullscreen toggle in Roblox Settings). Window Capture cannot see a minimized window, so never minimize Roblox while live.
- Do not stack a Display Capture and a Game Capture of the same screen in one scene; the two can interfere with each other.
- Untick “Capture Audio” on the window source and add Application Audio Capture on the Roblox process instead, so you can set game volume independently from your mic.
The best OBS settings for streaming Roblox are Window Capture instead of Game Capture, a hardware encoder (NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF or Intel QuickSync) in CBR mode, 6,000 Kbps at 1080p60 for a standard Twitch stream (or 4,500 Kbps at 720p60 on a weaker PC or connection), a 2-second keyframe interval, and Roblox’s own Maximum Frame Rate set to a cap your PC can hold so the game never starves OBS of GPU time. The rest of this guide explains each choice and how to adjust it for your hardware and platform.
Quick settings sheet
If you only want the numbers, start here. Everything below is set in OBS under Settings, with Output Mode switched to Advanced.
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Window Capture, method “Windows 10 (1903 and up)” | Roblox’s Hyperion anti-cheat blocks the hook Game Capture relies on |
| Audio | Application Audio Capture on the Roblox process | Keeps Discord and browser sounds off stream |
| Encoder | NVENC / AMF / QuickSync H.264 | Leaves the CPU free for Roblox, which leans on one or two threads |
| Rate control | CBR | Twitch and YouTube ingest expect a steady bitrate |
| Bitrate | 6,000 Kbps (1080p60) or 4,500 Kbps (720p60) | 6,000 is Twitch’s standard ceiling for H.264 |
| Keyframe interval | 2 s | Required for clean transcoding; 0 (auto) can cause problems |
| NVENC preset | P5 or P6, Tuning: High Quality, Two Passes (Quarter Resolution) | Quality gains above P6 are small and cost GPU time |
| Output resolution | 1920×1080 or 1280×720, Lanczos downscale | Lanczos keeps Roblox UI text sharper when scaling |
| FPS | 60 | Matches Roblox’s default cap and viewer playback |
| Audio bitrate | 160 Kbps AAC, 48 kHz | 160 Kbps is Twitch’s maximum audio bitrate |
Step 1: Capture Roblox the way the anti-cheat allows
Game Capture works by injecting a small hook into the game process. Since Roblox rolled out its Hyperion (formerly Byfron) anti-cheat on Windows, that hook is blocked, which is why a Game Capture source pointed at Roblox usually shows a black box. OBS’s own game capture troubleshooting page lists Roblox among games with known issues and simply recommends Window Capture instead. Running OBS as administrator, turning off HDR or reinstalling will not change this, because the block comes from the anti-cheat, not from your setup.

Step 2: Use the encoder your hardware already has
Roblox is light on the GPU in most experiences but can be heavy on a single CPU core, especially in busy servers. A software x264 encode competes for exactly that CPU time, so a hardware encoder is the better default on almost every PC.
- NVIDIA RTX 20 series and newer: NVENC H.264 for Twitch, NVENC HEVC where accepted. RTX 40 and 50 series also offer AV1, which suits YouTube.
- AMD Radeon: AMD HW H.264 for Twitch. Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 cards add AV1 for YouTube.
- Intel: QuickSync H.264 on integrated graphics is fine for 720p60. Arc cards and recent Core Ultra integrated graphics add AV1.
Twitch’s standard ingest takes H.264 only. If you are an Affiliate or Partner using Enhanced Broadcasting (OBS 30.2 or newer), Twitch configures the encoder for you, can use HEVC for a 1440p rendition, and encodes several quality versions on your own GPU, which adds some encoder load on laptops.
Step 3: Match bitrate and resolution to the platform
Roblox has a lot of flat, saturated surfaces that compress efficiently, so 1080p60 at 6,000 Kbps usually looks clean in obbies, tycoons and roleplay games. Fast shooters with constant camera spins are harder; drop to 720p60 there if motion turns blocky. The table below uses the platforms’ published guidance, plus a worked upload estimate: video bitrate + 160 Kbps audio, multiplied by 1.5 for headroom.
| Platform / target | Codec | Video bitrate | Upload you should have |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twitch 720p60 | H.264 | 4,500 Kbps | (4,500 + 160) x 1.5 = about 7 Mbps |
| Twitch 1080p60 | H.264 | 6,000 Kbps | (6,000 + 160) x 1.5 = about 9.2 Mbps |
| YouTube 1080p60 | H.264 | 12,000 Kbps | about 18.2 Mbps |
| YouTube 1080p60 | AV1 / HEVC | 8,000 Kbps (YouTube range 4–10 Mbps) | about 12.2 Mbps |
| YouTube 1440p60 | AV1 / HEVC | 16,000 Kbps (YouTube range 6–30 Mbps) | about 24.2 Mbps |
If your measured upload is below the right-hand column, step down one row rather than squeezing the bitrate. A stable 720p60 stream looks better to viewers than a 1080p60 stream that keeps dropping frames.
Step 4: Tune Roblox itself for streaming
Roblox caps you at 60 FPS by default. Its Maximum Frame Rate option (Esc, then Settings) offers higher caps such as 120, 144 and 240. Raising the cap feels smoother to you, but when the GPU sits at 99% usage, OBS has to wait for its turn to composite the scene, which shows up as “rendering lag” and stutter on stream even when your own game looks fine. Pick the highest cap your PC holds with some headroom left.
| Your PC | Roblox Maximum Frame Rate | Graphics Quality (manual) | OBS output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laptop with integrated graphics only | 60 | 3–5 bars | 1280×720, 60 FPS, QuickSync or AMF H.264, 4,500 Kbps |
| Entry dedicated GPU, 4–6 GB VRAM | 60 or 120 | 6–8 bars | 1920×1080 or 1280×720, 60 FPS, H.264, 4,500–6,000 Kbps |
| Midrange GPU, 8 GB VRAM or more | 120 or 144 | 8–10 bars | 1920×1080, 60 FPS, H.264, 6,000 Kbps |
| RTX 40/50, RX 7000/9000 or Arc, streaming to YouTube | 144 or 240 | 10 bars | 2560×1440, 60 FPS, AV1, 12,000–18,000 Kbps |
Set Graphics Mode to Manual so Roblox does not keep shifting quality on its own, which can cause visible pops on stream. Keep the in-game cap at or below your monitor’s refresh rate; frames above it never reach your screen and only add heat and GPU load.
Step 5: Audio, text and scene details
- Set OBS audio to 48 kHz and match your microphone and headset to 48 kHz in Windows sound settings to avoid crackle and drift.
- Roblox chat and leaderboards use small text. Keeping the canvas (Base) resolution at your monitor resolution and downscaling with Lanczos preserves more of it than a bilinear downscale.
- Roblox servers show usernames in chat and on leaderboards. If you play with friends or younger players, consider cropping chat or using a delay before going live.
- Under Settings, Advanced, enable “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion” if your Wi-Fi is unreliable; OBS will lower bitrate briefly instead of dropping frames.
Fixing common Roblox stream problems
| Symptom in OBS | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Black or white Roblox source | Game Capture blocked, or wrong Window Capture method | Window Capture with “Windows 10 (1903 and up)” |
| “Rendering lag” climbing | GPU at 99% from an uncapped Roblox | Lower Maximum Frame Rate one step; run OBS as administrator so it gets GPU priority |
| “Encoding overloaded” / skipped frames | Encoder preset too heavy for the GPU | Drop NVENC from P6 to P5 or P4, or lower output to 720p |
| Dropped frames (network) | Upload cannot sustain the bitrate | Use the upload table above; switch to wired Ethernet |
| Source freezes on last frame | Roblox was minimized or alt-tabbed out of fullscreen | Keep Roblox visible; use a second monitor for chat |
OBS Studio’s 32.x releases changed the default bitrate to 6,000 Kbps and redesigned the audio mixer and the Add Source dialog, so older screenshots in tutorials may not match your menus exactly, but every setting above still lives in the same Settings pages. Start with the quick settings sheet, watch the OBS stats dock during your first stream, and adjust one value at a time based on which lag counter rises.
