Watch: Best Gaming 17 Inch Laptop — Video Review
How to Choose a 17-Inch Gaming Laptop
- GPU tier: This is the single biggest factor for frame rates. An RTX 5060-class GPU is the modern sweet spot for high settings at 1080p and 1440p.
- Display refresh: 144Hz is the minimum you want for smooth gameplay; 165Hz QHD panels add sharpness for slower-paced titles.
- Cooling headroom: Larger chassis dissipate heat better, but check reviews for sustained clocks. Thin 17-inch models can throttle under long sessions.
- Memory and storage: 16GB RAM is the floor in 2026; 32GB future-proofs you. A 1TB SSD keeps a modern game library comfortable.
- Weight and battery: A 17-inch rig is not an ultrabook. If you carry it daily, prioritize models with USB-C charging and reasonable weight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are 17-inch laptops good for travel?
They are portable but bulky. If you move around daily, expect a heavier bag; if the laptop mostly lives on a desk, the bigger screen is a clear win.
How much RAM do I need in 2026?
16GB runs virtually every game today, but 32GB gives you breathing room for streaming, multitasking, and future titles.
Is an RTX 5060 enough for 1440p?
Yes, with sensible settings and upscaling it delivers strong 1440p performance and excellent 1080p frame rates.
Do these run hot?
Larger chassis generally cool better than compact laptops, but always use a hard surface and consider a cooling pad for marathon sessions.
Final Thoughts
The HP OMEN 17.3 RTX 5060 is our top overall pick for raw performance, while the Thunderobot Storm 17 offers the best QHD experience for the money. Budget hunters should look hard at the Acer Nitro 5.
