Acer Predator Helios VS Acer Nitro 5 - Intro

Hello everyone! The Acer Predator Helios VS Acer Nitro 5 Battle is upon us all! Don’t fall for these nice looks! These beasts want to rip each other to death!

For the Acer Predator Helios 300, there is the model of 2018 (June 11) and the Model of 2019 (May 1). I will review them both (the more the merrier haha) and then I will go along with the Acer Nitro 5.

Note: In the Search Boxes you can use terms like “has“, “supports” to find exactly what the laptop has and what it supports!.

Also if you want to change the RAM sticks, you don’t need to remove the battery panel. This model has its own access panel.

Overheating Issues

Acer Predator Helios VS Acer Nitro 5 - Overheating

The Achilles Heel of gaming laptops is overheating. To prevent that you firstly need to make sure your laptop is on a flat surface to allow sufficient airflow.

This laptop comes with a software called Predator Sense. You can turn on Coolboost through that software to further cool the system.

You can change the power plan to balanced and not high perfomance. No need to run the laptop at max perfomance if you can play your games with a medium perfomance.

You can also update your BIOS to the most recent version. Not that this will be as effective as the other steps above, but it’s an extra step so why don’t make it if it helps.

As a final measure, you can always buy an external cooler to assist further with the cooling. Compared to the laptop, an external cooler is quite cheap.

Amazon’s Ratings and Most Helpful Reviews

Amazon gives this laptop 3.9 / 5 rating with 724 reviews (for 3 products but all 3 are the same laptop with some more software and accessories).

Helpful – Positive Quotes From Amazon Reviewers

Audio: Audio kind of sucks. If you hold the speakers towards you, they sound fine, but they aren’t even close to ear level so all the sound is getting muffled by your lap. I usually use my headphones, but there are also a lot of bluetooth speaker options nowadays.

Materials: The case is solid. Parts of it are metal and other parts are plastic. Oils from your fingers show up very well all over the laptop. Wear vinyl gloves when playing games (joke don’t). You may have to clean it often.

Overheating: All gaming laptops will get hot. In fact most other laptops I considered buying were criticized heavily for getting too darn hot. The ones that weren’t criticized for that were criticized for breaking at the hinges. I purchased this one because it was reviewed as being sturdy and cooler than other gaming laptops.

I haven’t had any specific problems with this laptop, but others have suggested boosting the fan if in a hardcore gaming session. Invest in a cooling pad. It should be very hard to overheat this laptop to the point of failure.

Pro: One of the best non mechanical keyboards. Great travel distance and key responsiveness.
Pro: Lighter than I expected. It’s not an ultra-thin notebook, but very travel friendly.

Con: It can get warm, to the point of discomfort near the WSAD keys, which I assume the GPU is located internally. I turned on the coolboost feature or whatever its called and this helped.
Con: Bloatware. Took about 5 minutes to remove, but nobody likes bloatware.

Con: Drivers out of box are a joke. My network performance was horrible until several driver installs and windows updates completed. Drivers are extremely out of date (8+ months old) out of box.

Neutral: Design language is typical angsty 14 year old, red and black, stark angles, and angry looking PREDATOR logos. I personally don’t care, some people might not like the loud looks.
Neutral: PredatorSense software: It lets you slightly OC the 1060, which I did. It also lets you set fan curves. There’s plenty of third party software that does all this already but it’s nice of them to try.

4. Ultimately, the most important, is that this laptop throttles and overheats. Playing a game with nothing else in the background (PUBG, World of Warcraft, etc) will often cause your CPU to reach 100 degrees Celsius, causing it to throttle, FPS spikes, and stuttering until the temp comes back down to the realm.

I’ve troubleshot a bunch, and what is currently working is using aftermarket and Intel tweaking software to undervolt the CPU. Seriously not ideal, but I’m now at a better 80-85 degrees with auto fan control.

With the exception of the overheating, the rest of the caveats are minor at best. For a kick ass gaming experience at 1080p (hell, this thing has a 144hz refresh rate screen too!), it’s hard to beat this.

Helpful – Negative Quotes From Amazon Reviewers

Not sure whether the thermal paste is badly applied, or this laptop just sucks. But it has serious issues with overheating. I was consistently hitting temps of 90C+ and hit spikes of 98C quite a few times. The laptop shut down twice because it maxed at 100C. This is happening with the fan on MAX and the GPU set to NORMAL, not even overclocking.

However, based on reading other reviews, I believe this issue is not consistent with this item, it is a manufacturing flaw, not a design problem. This will happen to you SOMETIMES if you buy this laptop. This is not a risk I’m willing to take, I’m returning it for a different laptop which will not have cooling issues.

Below is a comment(answer) on the above 2 quotes.

You need to download “intel extreme tuning utility” and turn down the turbo boost on the cpu. I went down to 20 and 25 watts for the 2 options. My temperature dropped 20 degrees on my CPU and GPU while gaming. It maxes at 63 degrees now instead of 90 and the games still run smooth.

Games That Can Be Played

All the games the 2018 Edition can play, the 2019 edition can play them easier. I can tell you with great certainty that this 2019 edition can play all games that are currently available.

Of course no DXR (DirectX Ray Tracing). DXR requires the RTX series cards.

Amazon’s Ratings And Most Helpful Reviews

Amazon’s current rating is 4.0 / 5 with 101 customer reviews.

Helpful – Positive Quotes From Amazon Reviewers

The top (back of the screen) is metal, as is keyboard and palm-rest area, the screen bezel and bottom are plastic. This was a pretty good design decision as it keeps the bottom from turning into a hotplate in your lap. The hinge feels solid and moves very smoothly.

Just based on comparisions with others with similar ratings this screen seems like it might actually be a little brighter than it’s rated.

The screen does suffer from uneven backlight blooming so on a completely dark image, there are bright splotches around the margin, but this is pretty typical for an IPS LCD.

The laptop comes pre-configured with an overclock setting called “Turbo” mode which is activated by a button to the upper-left of the keyboard. You can, of course, create your own overclocking profiles.

Intel Optimus switches dynammically between the considerably less powerful and less power-hungry integrated Intel GPU and the GTX-1660ti.

From the Nvidia Control Panel, you can set the GPU to use for a given application so that whenever that program (i.e. your games) are launched it automatically does so under the Nvidia card.

The “Killer” WiFi chip in this machine is amazingly fast. My Internet service tops off at around 25MB/s, and this Wi-Fi card easily hit 23MB/s (that’s bytes, not bits) when downloading games from GOG Galaxy. I was pleased to see that the laptop also maintains an RJ-45 for wired ethernet connnectivity.

This is by far the best vented laptop I’ve ever seen. The heatsink fins and fans are clearly visible through the myriad slits on the bottom, sides and back.

When you hit that Turbo button to kick in the overclocking profile and those fans crank up, it sounds like a jet preparing to take off, so if you’re doing any moderate to heavy gaming, noise isolating or noise cancelling headphones are not optional.

All the quotes above are from one reviewer (It’s like a thesis!) so take a look at the link for more info.

Laptop performs great. You’ll be able to run pretty much any AAA title at Max – Ultra at reasonable frame rates. Cooling much better then the 2018 model and I didn’t notice any thermal throttling.

Helpful – Negative Quotes From Amazon Reviewers

Well, I don’t think there is a negative review of high value, but I will post a quote from the most helpful (18 people found it helpful).

On specs, this is an amazing laptop. Had it for 3 days, and it performed very well. However, and this is a BIG however, turns out that the Acer predator helios 300 series has a history of BSOD/black screens.

My Personal Experience With Acer

Personally, I never owned an Acer laptop but when I was at university, I had an associate who had one. The only thing that occured was that the monitor stopped working. Apart from that, I didn’t hear any problems.

With the HDMI or mini-DP port you can easily connect another monitor so in case it fails you, you can still work around it.

Acer Nitro 5 i7

There are many Acer Nitros 5 out there. I put the one with the i7 CPU because the Acer Helios above has a i7 CPU as well. No need to do a comparison with the one with the i5 CPU. The price is almost the same as well.

Best Laptop 2019

So Which One I Buy?

Acer Nitro 5 is not suited for this price range at all. All the laptops have like the GTX 1050 Ti graphics card, even the expensive ones.

As for the Helios 300 – 2018 and Helios 300 – 2019, it’s better if you buy the 2018 Version in the UK and the 2019 Version in the US.

And send me a selfie with this when you buy it! (from the Contact Form!).

  1. Thanks for this informative post, I believe getting a laptop device one has to know the purpose first of all, I’m a gamer and I need a system with good processor speed and I was searching the net for the best PC to get when it comes to gaming when I saw this post and it has helped me make a better and clearer choice, thanks for sharing this.

    1. Thanks Jeremiah for dropping by. Well for desktop you can change the graphics card and the CPU at any time, but for a laptop these things are soldered to the chip so it’s impossible.

For 2019, The Acer Predator Helios 300 – 2019 Edition is the best at its price range. I searched for other laptops with the GTX 1660 Ti but didn’t find any. The laptops with the RTX cards begin at fifteen grand.

Also, this particular model has 2 SSD NVMe slots with RAID 0 support (if you want to push it to its limits). I guess if you don’t play games like PubG or other graphics intensive games, you don’t need this laptop.

But since this post helped you clarify things, it’s a plus. Take care and have a nice day.

  2. Acer is one of the best laptops to get when it comes to gaming, while personally, I prefer a desktop setup for gaming, the laptops you compared will do the job and won’t let you down in the game. The reason I would go with a desktop setup is one issue you mentioned with the 2018 version of predator helios, the overheating, now I am not sure about the other two if they have the same issue, but I’ve heard from friends who’ve owned such laptops of overheating when playing high-demanding games, or even in the case of my sister, rendering 3D Models.

Do the other two laptops have the overheating issue?

    1. The Acer Predator Helios 300 – 2019 version has less overheating issues, according to Amazon reviewers.

I can see why you prefer a desktop setup. I was a desktop person for a long time. Now I need to be able to go mobile anytime so a desktop is not a good solution. I can always hook an external monitor to the laptop to make the experience better and when I’m travelling or going somewhere else, I take the laptop.

I play only League of Legends. It can’t be considered graphics intensive as I can play it on an AMD 4870 HD graphics card with over 100 FPS at maximum settings.

But the 3ms 144Hz IPS Monitor is useful for competitive games, where things change fast and the responses must be as sharp as possible.

Rendering 3D Models is the same as playing games with very detailed models that are rendered at real-time. So if overheating occurs from rendering 3D models, it will probably occur when playing games with intense graphics.

As for the Acer Nitro 5 overheating, I haven’t come across anything that says it does. If you have an external cooler, you can remedy the overheating. Make sure you use all the “cooling software” that the laptop provides. Also in the control panel, in the power options, it’s better to have a balanced power plan and not a high perfomance one because that can also make your laptop overheat.

My favorite brand is MSI, but this Acer Predator Helios 300 – 2019 version has made me change my mind about Acer.

I wish good luck if you ever going to buy a new gaming setup (laptop or desktop). Also have a nice day!

  3. Hello George, in all honesty, all these laptops are great in their respective rights and I really appreciate you for doing a juxtaposition between them. I think the Acer predator Helios are slightly better versions of a gaming laptop than the nitro5 and I think if I were to buy a laptop, I will prefer to buy the Acer predator Helios but the pricing too is kind of a scare but for the quality it comes with, I think I’m okay with it. Thanks

    1. I will go for the Acer Predator Helios versions as well. The Nitro 5 is good for a budget laptop, but at this price range it’s not that good as the Helios 300 versions.

Well the price is a mid ranged one so unless you play PubG or other new game titles with high demanding graphics, you don’t need to get a laptop in this price range. You can go for a budget gaming laptop at 5 or 6 hundred dollars.
