Choosing a gaming laptop can be hard because some people want the cheapest gaming laptop possible or other might want the laptop to be able to play some game or some others to be able to play new and upcoming games for like 5 years.

In this post i provide solutions for the above 3 ways to choose a gaming laptop. If you want to learn about computer parts before you continue, you can read my post on what is a gaming mouse, a gaming monitor, a RAM.

Choose a Gaming Laptop according to games you will play

3 Ways to Choose a Gaming Laptop - choices 3

This is what i think is the best of the 3 ways to choose a gaming laptop because it’s getting exactly what you are looking for.

Budget gaming laptops or even wanting to take a laptop that will last for the future are less “wise” choices than taking one laptop that will play the games you want.

After this way of choosing i think the second best is taking one gaming laptop for the future and the last way of choosing the budget laptop solution.

I play only League of Legends now so i don’t have any high requirements for a gaming laptop or desktop.

I don’t think i will play another game in the future as i try to climb out of elo hell.

The only gaming gear i need for LoL for now is better mouse and keyboard.

I have AMD HD 4870 (ancient graphics card), 8 GB RAM (DDR3) and a i7-920 CPU (1st generation i7 with 4 cores and 8 threads).

The only game i might have wanted to play is Mortal Kombat 11 (that is coming out on 23 April 2019). I won’t list its requirements but they can be met with a mid range gaming laptop.

So the smartest choice would be to choose a laptop based on what games you want to play.

If you don’t know or can’t know if something changes in the future, then buying a good one with the latest graphics cards and cpu will do the trick.

In a laptop where you can’t change the CPU or GPU , picking the latest is the best you can do regarding hardware parts.

These days RAMs and Hard Drives can be replaced so even if it not enough you can get more.

What matters when you get an expensive gaming laptop (with the latest CPU and GPU) is to somehow find a brand or model that will last long.

My first laptop was a Sony Vaio and it lasted for about 10-15 years then suddenly one day the screen wasn’t working.

The graphics card was GeForce 4 i think (don’t remember Graphics Memory).

But that’s enough for now let’s see the games that are popular today and their requirements.

Battlefield 5

It’s a new game released on November 20, 2018.

But let’s see its minimum system requirements.

“MINIMUM
OS: 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10
Processor (AMD): AMD FX-8350
Processor (Intel): Core i5 6600K
Memory: 8GB RAM
Graphics card (NVIDIA): NVIDIA GeForce® GTX 1050 / NVIDIA GeForce® GTX 660 2GB
Graphics card (AMD): AMD Radeon™ RX 560 / HD 7850 2GB
DirectX: 11.0 Compatible video card or equivalent
Online Connection Requirements: 512 KBPS or faster Internet connection
Hard-drive space: 50GB “

https://www.origin.com/irl/en-us/store/battlefield/battlefield-v#store-page-section-description

The first three components that matter the most are:

  1. The Graphics Card
  2. The Processor
  3. The RAM

Firstly, the graphics card because you won’t be able to play this game at all if you don’t have the appropriate graphics card.

Secondly, the CPU because some or most games use the CPU to a certain extent along with GPU.

Thirdly, the RAM. Even though the laptop uses mostly the Graphics Card Dedicated Memory to do its work, it uses RAM too. So it’s absolutely important that your RAM is adequate (else the game will slow down dramatically because of not enough RAM).

I’m sure you have heard about SSD disks. Nowadays buying a new laptop without SSD disk is not wise.

Let’s see recommended requirements:

RECOMMENDED
OS: 64-bit Windows 10 or later
Processor (AMD): AMD Ryzen 3 1300X
Processor (Intel): Intel Core i7 4790 or equivalent
Memory: 12GB RAM
Graphics card (NVIDIA): NVIDIA GeForce® GTX 1060 6GB
Graphics card (AMD): AMD Radeon™ RX 580 8GB
DirectX: 11.1 Compatible video card or equivalent
Online Connection Requirements: 512 KBPS or faster Internet connection
Available Disk Space: 50GB “

https://www.origin.com/irl/en-us/store/battlefield/battlefield-v#store-page-section-description

As you can see, the components that change the most are the Graphics Card, the CPU and RAM.

Finally, there are higher requirements if you want DXR (DirectX Ray Tracing). Let’s take a look:

MINIMUM FOR DXR OS: 64-bit Windows 10 October 2018 Update (1809)
Processor (AMD): AMD Ryzen 5 2600
Processor (Intel): Intel Core i5 8400
Memory: 12GB RAM
Graphics card (NVIDIA): NVIDIA GeForce® RTX 2070
DirectX: DirectX Raytracing Compatible video card
Online Connection Requirements: 512 KBPS or faster Internet connection
Available Disk Space: 50GB “

https://www.origin.com/irl/en-us/store/battlefield/battlefield-v#store-page-section-description

The price difference between the RTX 2070 and GTX 1060 6GB is high.

“RECOMMENDED FOR DXR
OS: 64-bit Windows 10 October 2018 Update (1809)
Processor (AMD): AMD Ryzen 7 2700
Processor (Intel): Intel Core i7 8700
Memory: 16GB RAM
Graphics card (NVIDIA): NVIDIA GeForce® RTX 2080
DirectX: DirectX Raytracing Compatible video card
Online Connection Requirements: 512 KBPS or faster Internet connection
Available Disk Space: 50GB “

https://www.origin.com/irl/en-us/store/battlefield/battlefield-v#store-page-section-description

RTX 2080 and 2070 have a big price difference. More than the CPU difference. And the RAM price difference is the least.

Resident Evil 2

A recently released game (25 Jan, 2019) but its recommended system requirements are pretty low.

RECOMMENDED:

Not extreme requirements, you can play this game with a decent prized laptop.

PubG

A popular game with similar system requirements to Resident Evil 2.

“Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system

Resident Evil requires a better processor , PubG more RAM and Graphics RAM.

Fortnite

Fortnite’s requirements are pretty low:

Recommended

CPU : Core i5 2.8 Ghz
RAM : 8 GB RAM

GPU : Nvidia GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7870 equivalent DX11 GPU with 2 GB VRAM

Windows 7/8/10 64-bit or Mac OSX Mojave

If you play only fortnite, a budget laptop is more than enough.

GTA V

GTA V system requirements are pretty decent.

RECOMMENDED:
Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: Windows 10 64 Bit, Windows 8.1 64 Bit, Windows 8 64 Bit, Windows 7 64 Bit Service Pack 1

A budget laptop would play this game with no problems.

Overwatch

Overwatch’s requirements can be met with a budget laptop.

Sekiro

RECOMMENDED:
OS: Windows 7 64-bit | Windows 8 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core i5-2500K | AMD Ryzen 5 1400
Memory: 8 GB RAM

As you can see, Sekiro can be played with a budget laptop as well.

Some last thoughts about this way of choosing

As far as game requirements go, with a budget laptop you can play most of the popular games except Battlefield 5 and PubG.

For Battlefield 5 and PubG, you need mid range laptop – if you want DXR, we are talking about 2-3x budget laptops).

Choose a gaming laptop that will play future games decently

Well, this way of choosing a gaming laptop is pretty straightforward.

It’s the second best (for me) of the 3 ways to choose a gaming laptop.

Just find the laptop with the best graphics card and CPU.

Well you should buy from a brand that has good reviews for its gaming laptops because you want this new expensive gaming laptop to play for a long time.

Choose a gaming laptop that is the cheapest you can get for gaming

The least wise(for me) of the 3 ways to choose a gaming laptop is the “budget gaming laptop” choice.

This way of choosing is pretty simple. You can search for gaming laptops with at least 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 1050 graphics card (or RX 560) , an AMD Ryzen or i5 CPU.

You should get one with SSD disk too but most gaming laptops these days have 2 slots for disks.

You could find the questions and check if the laptop has 2 drives for disks.

So even if you buy an HDD first you can add an SSD to the 2nd slot or replace the HDD.

Conclusion

Whatever choice you make , it’s yours.

I just analyzed the usual ways people might think when buying a gaming laptop (or a desktop).

I have 3 posts with affiliate links having my choices regarding each type of choice. You can check them if you like.

Choosing according to game List : https://livegamingequipment.com/cheapest-3-gaming-laptops-with-gtx-1060/

With GTX 1060 and 16 GB RAM you can play all games mentioned in the beginning and many others way less needy.

Choosing the cheapest gaming laptop that can play most games List: https://livegamingequipment.com/top-3-cheapest-gaming-laptops/

These laptops have 8GB RAM and GTX 1050 Ti or GTX 1050 (or AMD R9 560).

You can upgrade the RAM to 16GB or more but for gaming 16GB is enough.

You can also upgrade the Hard Drive.

The last list is the cheapest gaming laptops with the Best Graphics Card available (RTX 2080 Max Q). https://livegamingequipment.com/top-3-cheapest-rtx-2080-max-q-laptops/

With these laptops you can play anything at max graphics (at 1080p or FHD).

New games that require good graphics take time to come out (big companies working for years for one of these games).

So these laptops with the best graphics card will be able to play those games that come out in the near future.

I think they will be able to play them in max graphics at 1080p (FHD).

Maybe if some large game comes out after 6-7 years, then you might not be able to play in full graphics.

And that’s a maybe.

New graphics cards take also 2-3 years to come out so i think you will be safe for 6 years.

Let’s hope these laptops will work and don’t break after these many years.

Update: I did a review on ASUS TUF (2019) Gaming Laptop (middle price). Unless you want DXR, this laptop can play everything.

  1. Hello, George!
I just recently bought a new laptop for me, and I wish I had found your article sooner.
Thank you for sharing these tips with us, I think choosing a laptop or desktop based on the games you want to play is a good way to go.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend,
    Barbara.

    • No worries. Now that you found some useful information next time you buy a laptop you can use it (or recommend another one). If you think something is missing, you can always tell me.!

  2. Hi, Thank you for the thorough review! I’m not a game player but in the near future maybe we’d like to get one for our adult son. To be honest I don’t really know what games he likes or plays so in this case do you think a laptop with the best graphics card would do? My personal opinion is that if one buys a laptop, it’s an investment for the future too, so the best would be to get one lasting for years. Of course not the most expensive one. So which could do in our case?

    • the best graphics card for laptops right now is RTX 2080 Max-Q . The cheapest laptop with this card is about 2800$. MSI is a good brand (my sister and my friend have MSI laptops- not with this card but cheaper).
